Background of the Study: Chronic illnesses in children, such as asthma, diabetes, and sickle cell disease, pose significant challenges to both healthcare providers and families. In Sokoto State, like many parts of Nigeria, children with chronic illnesses often face barriers that affect their care and quality of life. These barriers can range from limited access to healthcare resources, inadequate healthcare facilities, and lack of trained personnel, to socio-economic factors such as poverty and inadequate health education for caregivers (Abubakar et al., 2023). Chronic illnesses require long-term management, and timely interventions are essential to prevent complications and ensure optimal development in affected children.
Nurses play a central role in managing chronic illnesses in children, providing education, medication administration, monitoring, and offering psychological support. However, many challenges limit the effectiveness of care, including insufficient healthcare infrastructure, lack of specialized training for healthcare workers, and challenges in communicating with families about the importance of consistent care. This study seeks to assess the barriers to effective care for children with chronic illnesses in Sokoto State hospitals, focusing on the role of healthcare professionals, particularly nurses, in overcoming these challenges.
Statement of the Problem: Children with chronic illnesses in Sokoto State experience significant barriers to receiving effective care, which can lead to poor health outcomes, frequent hospitalizations, and decreased quality of life. These barriers include healthcare infrastructure issues, insufficient training for healthcare workers, and socio-cultural factors that prevent families from adhering to treatment regimens. Despite these challenges, little is known about the specific barriers that hinder effective care for these children in Sokoto State hospitals. This study aims to identify and evaluate these barriers and explore potential solutions.
